Ruby got her first real boo boo. She usually plays in the bathroom and bedroom while Adam gets ready for work. She'd done it for months before noticing the shower door. Once she did, all she wanted was to push open the door. Adam let her and she didn't care that she ended up wet in the shower. Unfortunately, she wasn't that skilled with the door and slammed her finger on the way out. She cried until we gave her a bag of ice. Then she was tickled to have a new toy.
Grandma O'Brien came out for a wedding shower and stayed for a week. It was great for me because I ended up working every day and had someone to watch Ruby. It was great for her because she loved it and is excited about watching Ruby and Norah starting in August. It was great for Ruby because she apparently throws an occasional tantrum when I'm around and is perfectly happy all day when I'm not.I finished my first school year as a mom (and cried my eyes out when I thanked the parents for being so supportive). Even though I only worked one day a week, I started back when Ruby was only two months old and refused to drink a bottle. Thanks to our families and wonderful friend, Ruby was in good hands every Monday. I'm very lucky to have two and a half months off before I start teaching again. I'm even luckier that Grandma O'Brien will be watching Ruby when I do.
I surprised Adam with a night away for Father's Day. Grandma O'Brien was still in town and Caitlin and Kevin were not. I told Adam we were going to Santa Cruz so he could surf for the day but we were actually staying for the night. It was a fantastic. He surfed and I read magazines. We walked downtown for burritos before taking a nap. We showered whenever we felt like it and then saw a movie. We stopped at one bar for a few beers and then moved on to another for dinner. And best of all...we slept without listening for a baby and woke up whenever we wanted! It was so nice to take a break but we were excited to get home to see Ruby. Adam and Ruby celebrated the day by going up and down the stairs together.
Ruby has big girl shoes. She now wants to walk everywhere we go so I had to get her shoes that were concrete, gravel, bark, dirt, grass, etc friendly. I tried my hardest to find cheap shoes with flexible soles and discovered they don't exist. After reading not to skimp on shoes for the first two years, I broke down and got her a pair of Stride Rite tennis shoes. She's definitely a big kid now.
Last weekend I went to Las Vegas with my girlfriends from Ohio. Before leaving, I was totally dreading the trip. Las Vegas is pretty close to my least favorite place - I don't gamble, you can still smoke inside, I hate the weather and I'm too old for clubs. It didn't help that I was missing the group birthday party for all the Day One babies that weekend as well. After having tears when Adam and Ruby dropped me off at the airport, I bought my trashy gossip magazines, boarded the airplane with the lightest bag I've carried in 11.5 months and settled in with a complimentary beverage (thanks Aileen). It turned out to be a fantastic weekend. We ate, drank, laughed, gossiped, napped, pooled, danced and slept. We go a year without seeing each other and in minutes it's just like old times. I missed Ruby and Adam but totally relaxed with three of the best friends ever. Lucky for me, they're also all moms so baby stories weren't a problem either =)
Yay! Commenting finally works :)
